Great cameras but make sure you have a strong WiFi signal where they are mounted – Prior to getting these, I had an Arlo Pro 2 system (still have it actually). I’ve never really had any problems with them, the video quality is good enough, and you can’t beat the free cloud recording of the video clips, but I always felt like I wasn’t quite seeing everything and I’ve been getting tired of needing to charge the batteries every month or so. Figured I’d give the Nest outdoor cameras a try to do a comparison. So far, I actually do prefer the Nest outdoor cameras to the Arlos.

– After looking at alternatives, I went with my son’s recommendation who already owned one of these cameras. My hesitancy with purchasing them was with the operating temperature rating of -20C. This winter, it went down to -30C where my son lives and it worked fine. I installed 2 of my cameras at our cottage in northern Ontario and this morning it was -34C and they too were working fine. Operationally, they work well and easy to set up using the NEST App. The biggest challenge with the installation is connecting the power which requires the drilling of a 7/8″ hole from the camera location through any wall that is required to connect it to the power source. Another factor to consider is the cost of storage and management of the video clips. A 30 day subscription to Nest Aware will cost $8/month.

– Very disappointed in these expensive cameras. Install was a pain with the massive plastic casing that you have to run through the walls.. nightvision is buggy, notifications are very inconsistent being sent to my phone. Misses vehicles driving through our alley all the time. Worst of all they want you to pay a monthly subscription. Or else you’re only able to to see 3 hours of past notifications.. will be returning for something better with a hard drive.
