Good Starter Camera, Dosen’t Age Well – For a buck fifty ($150.00), you get what you pay for. I film a weekly open mic night at a local restaurant. The venue is outdoors on a covered stage in good weather and indoors in the dining room during inclement weather. This camera makes the transition well. At first I filmed indoors and it automatically went into night vision mode and I didn’t like the result of that evening’s taping. I tried to utilize the remote control features via the app and it was completely useless. The app is very basic and offers little control and the lag time is horrendous. So that feature was useless to me. The next issue I had was that it chops up the files in 13 minute (12:59) increments. So that created more editing time for me on the onset due to having to combine files in my editor. I learned to hit (double tap, actually) the Stop/Record button at the end of each set as most performers do not run past 10 minutes or so. It performed well in low light at first, inside was great and when we had afternoon sunlight while outdoors, the video quality was good. However when the evening light faded and we went to using the stage lighting (which is minimal but equal to the inside lighting) the picture would get dark and grainy and just didn’t look good at all. After using this camera every week for a year now, it had developed dark lines that scroll down the display when filming and are present in the finished video file making the video completely useless to post on YouTube. This past two weeks the camera has developed a sound in the audio that sounds like a metronome accompanied by a lot of hazy static. I now have two nights of completely useless video that looks and sounds horrible. Fortunately I also file a separate angle with another better quality camera for close up and fade shots that I can at least edit and use. I have learned to always have two cameras filming at all times. I am grateful for this camera, it has taught me that cheap cameras deliver cheap audio and video. Cameras need to be properly stored and transported and handles with care when filming. Although I have not had a major bump, drop or crash incident with this camera, I did keep it in a hard case in my truck with all the other equipment and it gets hot in Texas, which may have caused the problems I’m experiencing. I have also been able to learn some techniques and it helped me decide whether to continue to pursue this hobby or not without having to shell out a lot of money.
